Background information on JT file format
The JT format was defined many years ago as "Jupiter Tessellation", with the aim of creating a format for 3D model data that could be visualized quickly. EAI (Engineering Animation Inc.) was one of the first companies to use this data format as a lightweight 3D format in its applications. EAI was taken over by UGS (Unigraphics), the manufacturer of the CAD system of the same name, and became very widespread as a result. UGS tried to establish and commercialize JT file format via the JTOpen Toolkit. The JT file extension since the very beginning is JT.
During this time, more and more companies, including Siemens, became interested in this data format and urged the management to disclose the JT data format. UGS was eventually taken over by Siemens PLM. JT was retained, the CAD system was renamed NX.
The JT format has been continuously expanded by Siemens Digital Industries. Originally it was all about tessellation, triangulation, i.e. triangles that generate a 3D impression and can be easily processed by a graphics card. Gradually, more and more content such as BREP, assembly structure, the exact CAD description, product structure information, views, manufacturing information (so-called PMIs: surface finishes, dimensions, 3D annotations, tolerances...) etc. added.
JT from Siemens can be a single file for an assembly (monolithic) or a set of files, typically an assembly file plus all individual parts as one referenced file each - just as the CAD systems often organize it (fully shattered). However, there are now not only pure JT files, but also PLMXLM assembly files, that might contain model views and might reference other JT files. Siemens has also tried to position the JT with BREP as a competitor to STEP for BREP data exchange and long-term archiving of 3D data. However, this failed.
Firstly, because the JT BREP is now Parasolid - a proprietary data format, which is a no-go for long-term archiving. They work exclusively with disclosed ISO formats. Secondly, because STEP BREP has been established for these purposes for a long time and with considerable effort.
Why not use JT2Go or JT open toolkit from Siemens to view JT data?
Siemens Digital has been offering its own viewers for JT Data for a long time. Although JT is now the ISO standard, Siemens still sells the commercial JT Open Toolkit. The pressure of many customers led to the agreement to finally provide the JT2Go free Viewer, a free software that can view not only a JT file but also other CAD files such as DXF and image formats.
Siemens JT2Go only runs under Windows and is not a web version. For some customers/users, JT2Go's range of functions is sufficient, but for many it shows too many limitations and restrictions. The ease of use and lack of intuitiveness of JT2Go and TeamCenter Visualization is also often criticized.
The 3DViewStation is a fully-fledged DMU tool at the same level as VisMockup
Customers and users repeatedly compare the functions and features and their implementation in 3DViewStation and other products. Many people have confirmed to us that the 3DViewStation can functionally keep up with significantly more expensive digital mockup applications such as VisView Professional or VisMockup.
Comparing functions and features on same sample models, you won't see late loading - as we always load everything at a time. Model views can be optimized to perfectly fiiting zoom level, assembly structure could be manipulated, node beeing moved or added / removed. But 3DViewStation also provide so called "3D advanced analysis" functions, which include wall thickness analysis, curvature analysis, draft angle and undercut analysis as well as clash and clearance checks.
3DViewStation is a not a CAD translation software, still it allows to export 3D to e.g. STEP, IGES, OBJ and JT files. And it exports Views or sections form a 3D model to a 2D PDF or can export a 2D drawing like DWG to PDF, JEPG and more.
Training costs are significantly lower with the 3DViewStation, as operation is much more intuitive and the help system rarely needs to be consulted. We rarely have to provide training to customers and there have been projects where key users were able to successfully do their job with our 3DViewStation and its data after just two hours of product demo. In addition, under the same agreement and the consistency from desktop to WebViewer and VR version, the customer has a choice of comparable products depending on the situation.

Over 25 years of experience in the Viewer market
We started many years ago as a reseller of technical 2D viewers for the manufacturing industry. At that time, the most important data formats were TIFF, CALS and JPEG. This was the time of the switch from paper drawings to electronic documents. With the Spicer Imagenation, Kisters has marketed the most successful and legendary commercial product under a reseller agreement. Where other systems still use hardware for decompression with TIFF-G4, the Imagenation was unrivaled as a pure software solution. The first 2D CAD formats were soon added, with DWG, DXF, DWF and PDF and the ability to save to PDF.
Then the era of 3D CAD systems began. Today, Catia, Siemens NX (formerly UG) and Creo (formerly Pro/Engineer) dominate the high-end sector, but SolidWorks, Solid Edge and Inventor are probably even more widespread. At that time, Kisters as a reseller sold specialized, pure 3D viewers, pretty good for Catia, NX and JT files, still quite limited in their 2D support.
After all the manufacturers were gradually bought up, the new owners's ability to meet market requirements deteriorated. That's why we, Kisters, started developing our own line of products over 10 years ago and have been developing very closely to your needs and customer requirements ever since.
Goal was to overcome existing restrictions and limitations, e.g. moving from 32bit to 64bit, ultra fast loading times, allow note, markup, properties access & manipulation and much more.
The decision to develop the graphics core ourselves also very quickly proved to be the right one. Otherwise we would never have become so flexible and fast. Since then, the 3DViewStation has conquered ever larger parts of the market and is not only regarded as the leader by many customers.
